Day 34, Saturday, May 24: Another zero

Papillion, Nebraska

John and I both slept in: we made it all the way to 6:00 AM. Meg was running a half marathon, so she was already gone, but Jim was up. We had coffee and chatted for a while. He was a wealth of information for us since he had crossed the country and ridden the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska, where we would be riding in a few days.

At some point In the lazy morning John went off to do some actual work, and I went to catch up on the blog.

Around 10:45 the bike shop called and said my bike was ready. Jim once again went above and beyond and took me the ten miles to pick it up.

In the afternoon Jim, who is an amateur pilot and quite knowledgeable about aviation, took us to the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace museum. He has volunteered thousands of hours at the museum helping to restore planes, giving tours, and, I suspect, doing a million other things. So we had our own personal tour guide.

Back at their house, we had beers and yakked about bicycles and touring. Meanwhile, Meg, who had run a half marathon in the morning and gone for a 2 1/2 hour bicycle ride in the afternoon (she's training for an Iron Man) cooked another incredible dinner of salmon and pasta with mint pesto. Even though we had not ridden that day, John and I both ate like we had covered another 75 miles.

We went to bed early in order to get back on the road early. We were rested and full of good home cooking, and our bikes, while probably not like new were at least in better condition. This was a zero day I will remember for a long time, and I will commit myself to be as great a Warm Showers host as Meg and Jim.
