Day 58, Tuesday, June 17
After the continental breakfast at the hotel, we hit the road, paranoid of goat head thorns. This time we decided to avoid the country roads and stick to US 30.
Our first stop of the day was in Buhl, about 17 miles into the ride. It was just a convenience store for second breakfast. We had a long way to go and did not want to waste the cool hours of the morning on a sit-down meal.
From Buhl we made a long, easy descent into the Snake River Canyon.
We crossed the river south of Hagerman, where we stopped for lunch.
The day was getting hot, but there was not much wind and I think we both felt there were miles to be made up because of the zero the previous day. We pushed on.
I really didn't remember much about the afternoon, just hours of grinding through the hot, arid high desert. There were a couple of places we could have stopped for the night, but we rode on to Glenns Ferry. The RV park there had good reviews, and it seemed there were a number of bars to choose from for dinner.
We arrived in the east side of Glenns Ferry mid-afternoon. It was only another mile to the RV park, but we needed something cold to drink. Warm water and Gatorade had lost their appeal. We stopped at the local grocery and had cold sodas and chips outside on a shaded lawn.
The RV park lived up to its reviews. The tent camping was in a shaded field. The shower was nice, but oddly they had only one combined shower and toilet for men. If someone was showering there was no bathroom available. Other than that quirk it was a nice enough spot to spend a night.
We had dinner at a bar with a great bartender, Daisy. She was interested in our trip, mainly because she's thinking about hiking the PCT. I think she was just happy to meet someone doing something similar. The rest of the patrons did not care, but they were enthralled with a 2014 rerun of American Ninja Warrior.
